Pathway to Becoming a CA in India

The journey to becoming a Chartered Accountant involves three levels of exams:

  1. Foundation Course (CA Foundation)
  2. Intermediate Course (CA Intermediate)
  3. Final Course (CA Final)

Additionally, candidates must complete practical training, known as Articleship, and clear GMCS (General Management and Communication Skills) and Information Technology (IT) training.

CA Foundation Course (Entry Level Test)

The CA Foundation course is the entry-level exam for students after 12th grade.

  2. Direct Entry: Graduates, postgraduates (with a minimum of 55% for commerce and 60% for non-commerce), and students who have passed the CS Executive or CMA Intermediate exams can directly register for CA Intermediate.

Exemptions:

  • Students can attempt either one group or both groups at once.

CA Articleship (Practical Training)

The Articleship is a mandatory practical training period of 3 years under a practicing Chartered Accountant, giving students real-world exposure to auditing, taxation, and finance work.

Eligibility:

  • Candidates must clear either one or both groups of CA Intermediate to register for Articleship.

Key Details:

  • Articleship is a full-time training requirement for 3 years.
  • Candidates can appear for CA Final only after completing at least 2.5 years of Articleship.

CA Final Course

The CA Final is the last level of the CA course, focusing on advanced topics in auditing, taxation, and financial management.

  • Candidates who have cleared both groups of CA Intermediate and completed 2.5 years of Articleship are eligible to register for the CA Final exams.

GMCS, ITT, and Advanced ITT

  • GMCS (General Management and Communication Skills): Mandatory soft skills training.
  • ITT (Information Technology Training): Basic IT skills training before Articleship.
  • Advanced ITT: Advanced training in IT systems before appearing for the CA Final exams.

CA Final Results and Membership

After clearing both groups of CA Final and completing the Articleship and other training, candidates become eligible to apply for membership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and become Certified Chartered Accountants (CA).
